When Kids Age Out of WIC Support

When Dr. Travis Smith published this Journal article on WIC and aging out of the system, he had no idea that it would have a life of its own. Dr. Smith knew it was important to share this information in hopes of making serious changes in WIC policy and making life healthier for many children and families in need. He concludes that for what the government is spending at this time the amount needed to not have a "gap" in coverage is minimal in comparison.

It is not the actual research we want to focus on, but the reach this journal article had once it started "trending".  Starting with UGA TODAY 's Erica Techo, the Science/General Assignment Writer, creating a piece from the work and publishing it online, it took off from there!  A few days after the article was published, Dr. Smith had a radio interview with WUGA, Atlanta First News interview, and 11Alive picked up the story as well.

Jordan Powers, Public Relations Coordinator & Writer, CAES Office of Marketing & Communications, has been keeping track of the research over the past 6 months through print, TV, radio, and on-line media platforms.  It is estimated that the research extended to 231,596,902 people and that number does not include multiple podcasts and missed data .  The numbers do prove that if you can get traction, more reach, engagement, mentions and shares, it can go a long ways in making the impact that is needed to make change to those who need it the most!
