J.W. Fanning Lecture

The annual J.W. Fanning Lecture honors Dr. Fanning's commitment to leadership and service. Fanning served as head of the department from 1956-1961 before becoming the first Vice President for Services. He is a graduate of the University of Georgia and joined the Agricultural Extension Service in 1929. Fanning became an assistant professor with the newly reestablished Rural Organization and Marketing Department in 1934. His commitment to students made him a favorite professor among students. Dr. Fanning passed away in 1997, but his commitment to the department, university, and Georgia remains impactful.


The 38th Annual J.W. Fanning Lecture was held on Friday, November 10th, 2023 at the Tate Center on the Athens campus.  Over 90 people people attended to hear Dr. Will Masters.  Dr. Masters is a Professor of Food Economics and Policy in the Friedman School of Nutrition at Tufts University, and his lecture discussed "Access to a healthy diet:  Evidence from food prices, diet costs and affordability worldwide". Dr. Masters leads the Food Prices for Nutrition project that computes the cost and affordability of healthy diets in partnership with the FAO, the World Bank and national governments. He is the co-author of an undergraduate textbook, Economics of Agricultural Development: World Food Systems and Resource Use (4th ed. 2022), and a forthcoming textbook to be titled Food Economics: Agriculture, Nutrition, and Health. He is an elected fellow of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association (AAEA).
