Admission

By contacting our graduate coordinator, you can find out about specific entry requirements and available funding support. Admission status, credit requirements, transfer credits accepted, academic standards, residence requirements, and time limits conform to regulations as given by the UGA Graduate School.

Applicants to our graduate programs are welcomed from all undergraduate majors. An undergraduate degree in economics is not required. Incoming Ph.D. students are expected to have solid preparation in economic theory, mathematics, and quantitative methods.

If you are interested in special scholarships and fellowship opportunities (such as fellowships and other funding through the Graduate School), please submit your application before Jan. 1. Students interested in being considered for assistantships are encouraged to submit their applications by mid-February, although students who submit after mid-February will still be considered for assistantships. The final deadline to submit applications for international students is April 15; the final deadline for domestic students is June 30.

Requirements

All admissions are based on an evaluation by the departmental Graduate Committee and acceptance by the UGA Graduate School. Transcripts, GRE scores, statement of purpose, resume, and three letters of recommendation are required. Minimum requirements for GPA and TOEFL scores are:

  MS Applicants Ph.D. Applicants
GPA 3.0 3.0 undergraduate, 3.5 graduate
IBT TOEFL Total=80 + Speak=20 + Write=20 Total=80 + Speak=20 + Write=20

However, the merits of each applicant are considered individually.

Application materials

When applying to our graduate programs, follow the application procedure as explained by the UGA Graduate School. Applicants are responsible for the submission of all materials required for admission.

The following information must be submitted to the Graduate School by all applicants:

  • Graduate School Application Form
  • $75 application processing fee (for domestic applicants), non-refundable
  • $100 application processing fee (for international applicants), non-refundable
  • An unofficial transcript/s from each institution where you earned a degree
  • Official GRE entrance test scores sent by the testing agency
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Current resume
  • Statement of Purpose

International applicants must also submit the following additional materials:

  • Official TOEFL or IELTS scores sent by testing agency

ONLY if admitted, all admittees must send OFFICIAL transcripts as well as proof of graduation to the Graduate School. Domestic admittees will have to submit an Application for Georgia residence status if claiming legal residence in Georgia. International admittees will have to submit a Certificate of Financial Support form and VISA information.
