Over the summer, Dr. Craig Landry presented his paper "From Perception to Protection: Effect of Subjective Risk Perceptions on Flood Insurance Uptake" at Tribhuvan University in Nepal. This paper was co-authored with Lalita Adhikari (M.S. Environmental Economics '23, Ph.D. Risk Management and Insurance in progress). Within their research, they analyzed the National Flood Insurance Program's (NFIP) participation and what factors influence an individual's likelihood or willingness to participate in the program. Their findings indicate that the impact of Perceived Risk Frequency (PRF) on uptake in insurance programs is positive and statistically significant. The Perceived Risk Severity (PRS) also has a positive correlation with flood insurance program uptake. A key conclusion of the study is that how people perceive and respond to climate risk is critical for adaptation methods, especially as the climate changes and nations worldwide are facing increased natural disasters and costs.
