Jenna Harrington’s career in recruiting involves deep knowledge of business operations and strategic planning. After earning her HFIM degree from the University of Georgia, she built a career in which her HFIM coursework foundation, communication, and leadership skills have helped her succeed. In this alumni highlight, she reflects on her experiences at the University of Georgia that shaped her career.
1. Tell us about your path from UGA to where you are today.
After graduating from UGA, I joined ISG Partners as a Corporate Recruiter. Shortly after, I also took on the role of Executive Assistant, working directly with our CEO. Those experiences gave me exposure to many different areas of the business and allowed me to learn how a company operates from the ground up. Over time, I took on more responsibilities, helped improve processes, and contributed ideas that supported company growth. Today, I serve as Director of Operations, leading our internal hiring efforts and operational strategy.
2. What's the coolest part of your job?
The coolest part of my job is connecting with so many different people and knowing that my work has a direct impact on the success of our company. Whether it's helping someone land a new opportunity or building processes that improve our organization, it's rewarding to see the results firsthand.
3. How about the most challenging part?
The most challenging part is finding the right talent. Recruiting requires persistence, resilience, and the ability to hear a lot of "no's" before you get to the right "yes." Learning to stay motivated through that process has been one of the biggest lessons of my career.
4. What experience at UGA shaped your career the most?
Honestly, almost every class I took in Hospitality and Food Industry Management helped prepare me for my career. From presentations and group projects to business planning and leadership assignments, I learned how to communicate effectively, think strategically, and work with a wide variety of people.
One experience that stands out was creating and presenting a fully developed business concept. While I don't run a hospitality business today, the skills required to build, evaluate, present, and execute a business plan are skills I use every day. In my current role, I am constantly evaluating what is and isn't working, presenting solutions to leadership, and helping execute those changes across the organization.
5. What's your favorite memory at UGA?
My favorite memory is game day Saturdays in Athens. There was nothing like the energy, community, and excitement that filled the campus. Between football weekends, spending time with friends, and simply walking around Athens, there was always a sense of pride and connection that made UGA feel special.
6. What sets HFIM apart from a traditional business, marketing, or management degree?
HFIM is centered around people. The program teaches you how to create exceptional experiences, communicate effectively, solve problems, and operate efficiently in fast-paced environments. While many business programs focus heavily on theory, HFIM combines business fundamentals with real-world leadership, service, and operational skills. Those people-focused skills are valuable in any industry and have been instrumental in my career.
7. What's your #1 advice for a student interested in your field?
Be willing to talk to anyone and never underestimate the power of a positive attitude. Personality, grit, and work ethic can take you a long way. Set goals for yourself and don't be afraid to put yourself out there. Early in my career, I intentionally put myself in front of leadership, shared my ideas, and looked for ways to add value beyond my job description. Those opportunities helped accelerate my growth and opened doors that I never expected.
8. What is one thing about Athens you still miss?
I miss the game days, the sense of community, and the friendly atmosphere around campus. There was always an energy in Athens that made every day feel exciting, and it's something I'll always appreciate about my time at UGA.
